I know it's been ages since I've posted here, but as an intern I don't have time to stand around and take photos, damnit! I'm working! And it's hard work, but it's fun, and there are loads of compensations for the crazy people - like baby birds. For some reason, this year there seems to be a bit more of them, or perhaps it just happened on different days last year and I missed it. Anyway, one Saturday afternoon I happened to look over in the pond to see baby ducks. That's where this story starts.

| Three of the four babies. Notice one not look like others? It's a goldeneye and the rest are hooded mergansers. Goldeneyes apparently do that a lot; lay eggs in other birds' nests so someone else can have the fun of raising them. | We put them in bird holding, a whole other story for another day, but they were so small they kept escaping through the mesh, until some plastic was put up. Here I am with one we 'rescued', a merganser. |

| Then this little dove was found in the pond, barely able to lift its head, starving to death. So it was brought inside, handfed for a bit, and is now rather imprinted on humans. We've named it Ruby. | Those first four ducklings sadly did not make it. However, we now have a second clutch of six, actually raised by mama goldeneye herself. They only hatched last Saturday, again discovered by me, so cross your fingers for them. |

| Not discovered by me, but darn cute anyway, sparrow babies! This is with mama watching protectively over them. | She's not quite sure what I'm doing, but hey, I fed her worms. Lots and lots and lots of them. | ![]() |

| I guess that eventually decides in my favor and she trusts me enough to fly away. Leaving the babies to close their beaks and settle in. | And, they're not baby birds, but equally cute, sleeping hedgehogs! I believe that's Edina's adorable little face and Patsy's back. |
